“The New Acceleration” is a book that informs and makes you thinking about the good and the less good consequences of AI.
This book was conceived to inform the general public about how progresses in Artificial intelligence will affect technology and our lives.
However, given that the book really covers several areas of applications from retail to medical it is really a good start point also for managers or technical managers that want to get an overview of the field. Often even specialists tend to have a narrow vision on a sub sector such as natural language processing or natural language generation but miss on the general picture.
The book provides a very good resource for references and also for those who want to further their understanding of the connected technologies to AI.
The book covers additional very interesting topics: from the difference in perception between the general public and the actual pervasiveness of AI today, to the not so obvious implications of artificial intelligence.
For example, in policing, justice, workforce training, and other fields that are often not covered by the media.
David does a great job on making a complex technical domain easily accessible for the general public but also making you think. The book promotes an unbiased dialogue on the not trivial consequences of adopting this new technology in a variety of aspects in our lives. As a former product manager and entrepreneur, the book made me thinking of additional considerations to make when designing new and building new products.
For example, in the field of medical imaging I reflected that hyper specialized algorithms may luck common sense and this is a point that should be accounted during the product design phase to avoid disastrous consequences later on.
Are you ready for computers that can See, Hear, Talk & Think? Our relationship with computers is changing. Advances in technologies known as Artificial Intelligence, particularly those in the machine learning and deep learning fields, are enabling computers to see, hear, talk and think. The New Acceleration is an easy-to-read overview of the key technologies shaping our world. The new capabilities of computers and other devices have huge implications for business, for society and for individuals – bigger than the impact of any technological change to date. Although the technology can be applied in areas as diverse as policing, criminal justice, healthcare and logistics, it comes with limitations and risks. There will be casualties along the way for those who don’t change. AI is already silently and invisibly changing everything. If you don’t learn to see it, question it and embrace it, you’ll lose out. The New Acceleration is your essential guide to this challenging and exciting world.
